I visited the mechanic today and got some info on the Jeep. Both yokes, the one on the driveshaft and the one on the tcase have been hitting and are bad. The top ujoint is bad. They want to send the driveshaft to a specialist to weld a new yoke on, and put a new one on the tcase. They also want to replace the bottome ujoint while there doing all this work. If I get a new driveshaft, will it have a new yoke on it? How hard is it to put a new yoke on the tcase?

Just go to the jy and pull one,the drive shaft just slips into the xfer case unless you have a slip yoke eliminator, which I think you would know if you did. Once you have the other drive shaft you can just put it on. I AM VERY SUPRISED THE SHOP DOES NOT RECOMMEND THIS OVER THEM HAVING THIS ONE REPAIRED. It is a matter of $600 or $50 if you do it.
Even if you had to replace the yoke it is very easy. If you have to let us know someone will tell you how it is done.

I think I am going to do it myself. How do I tell if the yoke is good from the donor Jeep? I'm gonna remove the rear driveshaft so I can drive it home. I have a 242 tcase, which 4x4 should I be in to drive home?

If the driveshaft is still installed it is good, how far do you have to go to get home? you will want to be in full time, not part time or 4 lo.

About 5 miles, but on the highway. They never took the driveshaft off, so I'm gonna have to take it off in the parking lot at the mechanic.

BE CAREFUL my buddy snaped the rear, we drove home on the front and that front driveshaft is not used to pulling your jeep around by itself!! so of course we snapped that one too. PLEASE find a friend to take you, im telling you, it would be much safer. keep your XJ off the roads tell you find a new DS and pop it in!

my honest opinion- leave the xj in the parking lot, go with a buddy to a machine shop, get the u-joints installed, and re-install on your jeep. then your done! dont risk driving im serious !

I agree if you can do it in there lot do it,alot of times they bring up the insurance issue,or take it somewhere close by,do not drive at highway speeds.

I'm not sure how long I can leave it in there parking lot since I still need a replacement with good yokes. I have access Dodge truck, can I just hook some tow rope to it and tow it to my house? What would good yokes look like? How do I replace the tcase yokes?

Like I said you do not need to worry about all that, just go to the jy and pull one,you will see what a good yoke looks like when you pull it,the yoke for the xfer case will be part of the new driveshaft.

Ok. I'm not going to be able to remove the driveshaft until its at my house. Since its still attach can I tow it 4 wheels on the ground behind my truck or does it have to be on a flatbed.

bring a ratchet set, take off the driveshaft, it will take you 5 minutes. then if you do tow home, go slow with hazards on, when you need to stop or slow down the jeep does most of the braking. this way your rope will stay tight. bring your dad!

I can try but every bolt has been so rusted on that I may need to soak it in PB blaster. If I can't get it off should I get a flatbed?

soak it up, try to remove it, take your time...

if you got another buddy thats experienced in towing with just a rope, try and move it someware you can work on it. its a real easy fix! i just did one in a parking lot myself. from broken u-joint to on the road in about 2 hours
