i am currently replacing my rear main seal and i read something about a sump seal what is it and should i replace it?

 

i just dont want it to leak oil again

 

if you had to take the oil pump off to take the oil pan out it could be the seal in between the pump and the block

 

The oil pan, in various manuals and by various mechanics, is often referred to as a "sump" or "oil sump" - or even "sump tray."

Therefore, the "sump seal" would be the oil pan gasket - I usually call it the "oil sump gasket" or "sump pan gasket."

It's sort of like the difference between a "wrist pin" and a "gudgeon pin" - they're the exact same part, but it's a "wrist pin" on this side of the Atlantic, and a "gudgeon pin" in British English.
