2.5L is just the 4.0L less two cylinders, it's fine for durability. With an auto and 2.5L you'll use a pile more gas, but if you ever replace the drivetrain you'll appreciate the deep gears.

If you do buy it, please don't **** it up like a lot of the morons here with sawz-all fender trimming. Waggies are rare as it is lol

If it isn't a rust bucket I'd do it. The 87 XJ body will take a 4.0L

I'll keep the body how it is. No cutting this rare jeep up. That's the main reason I want it cause I no how rare they are.
I'll put a small 2"-3" lift on it, is all its getting.

2.5 is a tough engine, however mpg for carb models is almost identical to 4.0, and yet it does not deliver the performance you require in the highway. I wouldn't think of buying a 2.5 XJ. But if I'm buying a wagoneer, the only thing I would look is the rust. If it's not a rust bucket, go for it. 0-60 takes 15 minutes, but driving a Wag is lifetime joy.

Only the 84-85 2.5's were carbureted. When mine was stock with 235/75-15 tires I could average 21 mpg.

Well I'm getting between 18-24 mpg on my stocker 4.0. Only 2" lift with same size tires as yours. I drove 2.5l carbureted before, it only got 18-20 mpg at best.

I bought an MJ with a 2.5 in it thinking it'd be fine to just drive around...

To hell with a 2.5. I can pedal my bicycle faster.

Sold it less than 2 months after I bought it. I had it listed for sale 2 weeks after I bought it.

Plus, (you can all hate me for life if you want to) I think the Wagoneer front ends are fugly as hell.

I currently have one Cherokee with the 2.5(My Beloved Red/Black 1984 Cherokee Chief). She of course has the Carter YFA 1 barrel carb. They are Not what you want. That 1987 2.5 will have a reliable throttle body injection. The Chrysler 904 3 speed auto is Tough, just not High performance, by any means. I would buy it, but for a cheap as I could get it.

I don't think it's a bad motor. The 4.0 is just better. It has more HP and will last longer.
