I might be getting a 1987 jeep wagoneer XJ. (White with wood paneling outside w/leather and power everything) buddy wants $1,200 for it. Come with the 2.5L motor and 4.56 gears 177k miles. Not sure what tranny or t-case is behind it. Gd deal?

From what I've heard they're just as sturdy, if not sturdier, than the 4.0. Of course the 60-70 less horsepower is a big issue to some people. It would be to me.
I love my little 2.5. On road its a little slow, but its got plenty of torque for wheeling.
With 4.56's it must be an automatic? I wouldn't want a 2.5 with an auto personally, but I wouldn't buy a 4.0 with an auto either. Hopefully it has the NP231. If its an auto with the NP242, I'd find something else if it were me. As far as the engine itself, the 2.5 is bulletproof though. My 87 is at 245k miles and still going strong, original engine, AX-5, and NP231.
If you like it, get it. It only matters if you like it really, you'll be the one driving it.

I've got a 1989 xj with the i6 motor with a blowin aw4 transmission. Not sure if I wanna rebuild it or try a used one out. I've never rebuilt a transmission before.

The 2.5 is ok for everything but the highway. It's "okay" but you shouldn't have to have your foot on the floor to do 70mph up a slight incline...

easy? not really. doable? yes.
requires core support replacement new wiring, obviously the engine, transmission is different, t-case may or may not be the same.

that engine really is a tough little bugger, but like already said.....it's a bit of a boat anchor.
I had a wrangler a few years back with it, got great gas mileage.
