Default What's this noise?

When I'm coming to a stop, I hear a "reek reek reek" coming from what I thought were the rear brakes. Kind of a circular sound & the closer to stopping the less intermittent it is.
After stopping, when I release the brake pedal, there is a loud "release" sound coming from back there. Kinda like a "UUUrrrrch" sound. Like the brake hardware releasing from the drum or something.
The mystery is if I coast to a stop in NEUTRAL, using the brakes the same way, I don't hear or feel either sound. Only if it's in gear.

89 4.0 AUTO

Any ideas? thanks

Yes only when braking & then letting off the brake (after a COMPLETE STOP) Once the initial "release" of the brake pedal is done, I don't have the sound(s) again until another rolling stop is done.

When I stop in NEUTRAL, I don't have the "reek reek or the UUURRRCHHH". ONLY in drive. Not neutral or reverse.

I had the rear drums turned about 400 miles ago. I have taken the rear wheels off & checked the drums & hardware. They are OK. I have checked the U -joints & they are tight.
That's why this has me puzzled.

10 4 will do. Any particular reason I don't have these noises when in neutral other than lack of drive train pressure?

"I have taken the rear wheels off & checked the drums & hardware. They are OK."

Have you considered turning up the tunes so as to block out these annoying sounds?
