This ended up costing me a battery:

It read fine at autozone, but it had a dead cell, so it just couldn't keep up the power demands.
I also go through an alternator every few months due to mud holes.
Sounds like you're on the right track.

If they just volt test them, it will often show as good. They need to load test the battery to determine if it is still good. I have seen MANY batteries still show a 12+ volt charge and have a weak cell. A truely dead cell will show around 10 volts. A load tester is around $20 from Harbor Freight.. A 50 amp load tester is more than sufficent for testing for a dead cell.
My tester at AZ will load test all batteries. The store you went to probably had lazy guys who would rather use the hand held battery tester than actual unit that is intended for battery tests. If you go to an AutoZone to check a battery and they aren't wheeling some bulky piece of equpiment outside, then ask them to get the Duratester. That will tell you exactly whats wrong with the battery.
If they did use the Duratester then they didn't give it the right specs on the battery. Sorry, I just hate it when people are lazy like that, haha.
