Doesn't seem so long ago you'd just take such a part to your local parts place & the lad in the backroom would rebuild it, probably throwing in a free upgrade, while you waited - but it was!

If we were in Pakistan, they would rebuild it
Any tradesman who is half good in this Country at the moment can pick and choose his own work, charge whatever they want, and if you demur, chuck a tantrum and tell you to take your piece of **** and **** off

I had a tradesman say I was being "disrespectful" when I suggested he may like to give me an estimate on something I was showing him, he said he would do the whole job or nothing.
I was trying to explain I restore stuff for 50yrs, and it would not be economic for me to pay tradie rates on this job for stuff I could do myself

Back in the day the Saturday boy in my car parts shop of choice rebuilt alternators & starters, which rather suggests it doesn't require the expertise of an auto electrician.
About 20 years ago I was touring South Africa with a car club. When we rolled into Port Elizabeth early one evening a lot of our cars had suffered from the the length of the day's drive, the heat & dust & we needed about 1/2-dozen alternators, about the same number of starters - & a dynamo. Local sparks said if we could remove them, he'd pick them up from the hotel & bring them back in the morning. He arrived while we having breakfast, handed over all the freshly overhauled units & went on his way, leaving us to re-install them & be ready to go with the minimum of delay. Cost was cheap by UK standards.
I doubt it's still like that there, but probably is in e & W Africa &, of course, most of Asia.
