Hey all, I've been on the hunt for an XJ for a while and have a poor understanding of their value. KBB gives me one price and NADA is a lot higher, so blue book value is not even consistent. So, my question for you all is what can I expect to get for about 3k (+/- $500)? I know folk on here got screaming deals and I'm not really interested in hearing that since it is a right place, right time deal and what I want to know is what I can expect day in and day out.
Second question. I have a lead on a 96 SE 4wd 4 door, I-6 with 115,000 (baby) that is in great shape, so what is it worth? It has absolutely no options (no cup holders, no power options, and not even a rear window defroster). I'm actually excited about this since I want to own the rig forever and like that the electrical system has less places to fail. But, I know that will impact the value. It has a clean interior and the exterior is generally OK: minor dings and a 4" spot on the hood where the paint is pealing. It is completely stock, but the mechanics are great.
KBB quotes it at $1900 (private party), but NADA quotes about $2k (trade in) and about $3500 (retail). I'd be buying this private party and want to get a good deal that is fair since the seller is a close relative. Hopefully I have a pic of it attached to this post (Sorry if it is huge. I don't have any photo editing software on my dad's comp). Please let me know what you think.

Looks like a pretty good XJ and you can normally get them for cheap its hard to give it an exact number becouse prices can be different everywhere and people will have different oppinions but I would say around 2900$ but if youe really want to get a good idea go on autotrader.com and see what simualar cheorkees are going for to get in the ball park....HTH

through all my searching untill i found my current XJ and my quest to find a second one...i have found NO consistency in price....for example i have seen 1988 XJ's go for 3k and i have seen 99's go for 2K. It all comes down to condition/Milage and how bad the person needs money...there is no magic number. Be patient keep searching and have cash to lay down as soon as you see it...

Value is all relative to each person. I have found that each rig can be valued on the basis of what you want. If it has no power options then to you its worth a bit more, not less like KBB says it is. Just recently I have found this out. KBB and NADA is close to the basic value of the Cherokee minus the add on's like lifts intakes, exhaust, racks etc. I just paid full price on my cherokee but you would die if you found out what I paid. To say the least I got a deal, but I also waited for a deal like about 8 months. So short story, if the jeep is worth it to you pay what there asking if its not then try to get the deal you want, then if its not then move on to the next one. Thats how I look at it.
P.S. I cant stand it when people put values on stuff they haven't looked at. How do you know its worth it?

I just paid $3K for a 1993 Sport, which was high book retail. I do think that prices vary widely and "book" is only a reference for loan value on older Cherokees. A decent used Cherokee on a dealer lot in Colorado Springs was easily $1K over book. Hard to imagine in this economy, but a friend of mine who is a dealer said selling price and book price are way out of whack now due to the wild swings in gas prices.
With that said, I knowingly paid a premium for 1) low mileage (98K), 2) 5 speed, 3) garage kept, one owner, 4) new michelins and quality battery, and 5) exceptionaly clean condition. The owner would not come down even $50, so I was faced with walking away and hoping it didn't sell, or paying the asking price.
If you look at a number of Cherokees you'll quickly spot a "bargain", but it may not be the price but condition it's in.
Good Luck!
