Default What would cause a hub unit to go out in under 1000 miles?

I put new hub units in and put less than 1k on them and the ps is shot allready.Everything is tight in the front.Bushings are new same with the axle u-joints,springs,shocks,tie rods, sway bar, sway links, damper, brakes you name it.My alignment is right on.Tires are also new. There is nothing that I can think of that would cause them to go out that quick.Anyone have any ideas? Thanks alot.

some unit bearings are just junk. I work on cars for a living and have seen numerous bearings fail in short time period.

One thing I learned about D-30 unit bearings on another forum, is to always use "Timken" bearings. There is no acceptable substitute.

The ones I bought have a lifetime warranty.I was just wondering what would have caused them to go so quickly.

Improper torque setting, iirc they should be about 80ft/lbs.

Running for any length of time without an axleshaft or stub shaft.

Defective bearing.

Lots of mud/sand driving.

Thats about all i can think of that would lead to premature failure.

How can you run without an axle shaft or stub shaft?Your tire wouldn't stay on ,would it? My last hub unit lasted for 14 years and I mudded it for a long time before it went out.I only have under 1k on these ones.I torqued it at around 200flb cause I didn't know what to torque it at.Thats probly my problem,ya think?

You see my point.

I have seen some who thought they could remove shafts and take them in to get new ujoints pressed in.. others after breaking a joint on the trail thinking they could drive out without anything.

You do need the stub/nut at minimum to keep the bearing assembly pressed together.

Got pictures of the damaged unit?

Generally, infant mortality is caused by improper installation. Bearing defects from the factory are possible, but improbable.

Any idea how long the unit was on the shelf before you bought it? Was it stored in a high vibration location, that can make a mess of new bearings.

According to my manual, the 3 bolts for the hub are 75ft.lbs, and the axle nut is 175ft.lbs.

Over torquing can ruin them very fast.
