Default What is this and why is it ticking???

I noticed steady ticking in the jeep that would come and go. I didn't get faster under throttle, it just ticked. One day it would be there. The next it wouldn't. I didn't think much of it until I heard it yesterday. So I dug around and found this guy. I thought about firing up the google machine, but I don't know what to type.

At first swipe I'd guess it's a solenoid gone bad trying to fire. But for what system? When I put my hand on top of the black part with the wiring connection there was a thump in rhythm with the tick.

Can anyone help me out here?

It's the purge solenoid, it clicks, don't worry about it. It is for the EVAP canister, it opens and lets the fuel vapor go into the engine to be burned.

Yup, purge. The noise is normal. It would be bad if they didn't isolate it.
