Default What is this and why does it tick/pulse?

Noticed a ticking noise from under the hood to the left of the engine once she got warmed up. It was a constant pulse/tick. I put my hand on whatever this is in the attached picture and could feel the pulse/tick coming from it. What is it and is it in need of replacement? It's a 99 xj with 81k miles.

Are they known to tick? Does ticking mean it's gone bad?

To my knowledge this is perfectly normal. My 98 does this as well.

Actually it looks like there's quite a bit of info out there on these. No need to respond ill do some research. I just didn't know what the heck it was. Thanks for the help.
