I did a bit of searching for what folks have found the best success with for PS fluid and found a spectrum of choices.

I have always used dex/merc or dex 3/4 in previous vehicles and never had issues. Will that stuff be OK to use in the '88 Cherokee? I have been using pennzoil power steering fluid and I am not happy with it its performance.

Currently I am using the BarsLeak P/S repair fluid and love it. It is a 2 part liquid you pour in.

Lucus PSF .seems to work for me that's with a new pump, hoses, and a good flush.

I use "Mopar Power steering fluid" It was made by Valvoline and I've seen it recommended in the owner's manual PDFs. I just used a syringe to pull all the fluid out of the reservoir and fill it with fresh fluid every time I do an oil change.

Neglect from the previous owners had the fluid looking black and I didn't want to fuss with disconnecting the hoses for a full flush. I turned the wheel back & forth the first time to clear out a bunch but it was still light brown for a while.
