Default what transmisssion fluid to use???

ok after researching the forum, i am still a little skeptic about what transmission fluid to use in my 99 XJ with the NP231 transfer case. i just had a leak (well not a leak a water fall) of transmission fluid leaking from the radiator. at first i thought my tranny went . i think its the bottom rubber hose which i have to replace tomorrow. so first off, it seems like a fairly easy job right? any suggestions on that? i plan on going to advanced and buying x amount of pressurized tranny hose and a couple clamps. but when i refill the transmission, i'm not sure what fluid to use. i'm thinking dex merc atf? thanks in advanced.

transmission fluid or transfer case fluid?

dex III was the original spec fluid for the np231. IV should be fine.

Theres no "probably" about it, you HAVE the aw4. It was the only auto trans used in the Cherokees.
The original spec fluid was Dex II (your drain plug should be marked 'dII'), that is no longer made so you use Dex III.

Use Dexron III on your automatic trans... Its the most recommended...
Just make sure you follow the proper way of replacing your auto trans fluid...

Not dIII OR 4

Just use III. Seriously...

I dont understand why this becomes some big thing every time someone asks this question.

The complete answer to this question..

IF its a cherokee, and has an AUTOMATIC transmission (w/ the 4.0 L), its an AW4, and takes dextron/mercon II. The fluid that TOOK its place as and upgrade from II is dextron/mercon III.

The correct is also the same for the t-cases. DexIII.

Dont just throw fluid types out there for people, III is tested and proven to work, i wouldnt chance any of the other dextrons or ATF+ stuff in my rig....any one else I suppose could, knowing what type of risk they take....

Theres no need to even TRY a different fluid in it....III works, and its available.

Sorry for getting a bit fired up about this, but it just bothers me when people throw out other fluids at the OP's on this topic....theres no need to use anything other than the dexIII in the AW4 trans...
