From what I have heard pre 97 can fit 30's without rubbing and 97+ can fit 235's. The wheel wells are smaller on 97+.

It being a 2000 XJ, 30" BFG M/T's will rub on your LCA's at full lock due to larger lugs. I ran 30" BFG A/T's before getting my lift and was fine. Offroad, I rubbed a little, but only when I was really flexing the stock suspension - which reminds me, I still need to get new bump stops. If you're doing soft 8's, watch your fender flares. You're gonna rub on those and pop 'em off if you go offroad 'cuz of the backspacing.

I have a 98, and I ran 235s when it was stock. I put a 2" old man emu on, and now I am using 30x9.50x15 BFG AT.

What back spacing would you recomend? 4.75" or 4"..If it comes to it and I have to do minor trimming I will. I do not plan on doing any serious off roading (if any). The truck is going to be seeing alot of snow and I just wanted to get a nice tire that would not have trouble in any condition.
