What is this solenoid?

What is this solenoid?
I went looking for the source of the ticking under my hood (thinking flex plate or evap system solenoid) and found that it was this solenoid - the grey one in the middle of the pic. Anybody know what it is? I'm guessing something to do with the timing.

That's the cam shaft position sensor.
