Alright all,
I'm hopefully going to take another trip to the JY tomorrow to take more photos and figure out what year this MJ is? The axle in this picture doesn't look like the dana 44 axles that I'm seeing in photos, but I'd at least like to know what this is. I don't know if I'll be able to get any numbers off of the axle, but I'll crawl under there and look for any information that can help. What info should I get from the JY to make a positive ID?

GM CORPORATE 14-BOLT
With a 10 1/2-inch-diameter ring gear, the biggest 14-bolt GM rearend looks much like a Dana 70, and is but a few thousandths of an inch shorter in ring gear diameter. This axle is commonly used with big engines and/or overly large tires. It was used under 1973-87 3/4-tons.

 

GM CORPORATE 12-BOLT
The stronger 12-bolt, with an 8 7/8-inch-diameter ring gear, can be found in various 1964-82 GM 1/2- and 3/4-ton rearends.

 

Here you go, this is my 87 D44:

 

yes it is a dana44. they came stock in some xj's and mj's.
however, mj is spring under, so if you wanna use it in an xj, you'll have to weld some new spring perches ontop. xj spring perches are about a 1/2 inch wider too.

gm 14 bolt is about twice the size as our little d44's.

 

What the heck??? Trying to steal my MJ??? Looks almost exactly like mine with the replacement fuel tank and ugly Jeep mudflaps on the front... The only difference I still have some of the exhaust left...

 

if thats a sterling axle it will most likely have eight lug bolt pattern unless it was redrilled

 

when i pick that up next week the new muffler will be on it, he said it fell off cuz it wasn't tight

 

that doesn't look like a 44 look at the bolt pattern holding the cover on

 

IT is not a D44. Me and COs have Dana 44 we prolly look at them everyday in Awe. So take it from us that it is not one. It is prolly a good axle either way better than a 8.25 or D35. But it is not a D44 sorry.

 

hey cosxjfan what diff cover is that? i just picked up a 44 today for the jy and the diff cover is all rusted up

now that i actually look at it closely. it does look like a sterling.

i just assumed it was a 44 since he said it was in an mj.

are you sure it's not an fsj comanche like a honcho?
still it would be either a 44 or a 20. and it's not a 20.

i'm stumped.

 

The 44's come to a lil more centered than the one you have pictured. And personally the one you have pictured looks a lil more beefy than a D44
