Today I decided to tear into the back section of my 1995 XJ in search of rust.
I pulled the carpet, and sure enough I found some rust spots, one hole through the floor pan which is an easy fix.
However I found two pieces of sheet metal attached to the floor right behind the back seat. They are attached with three screws and thus easily removed.
Other than being a rust starting point, what purpose do they serve??
They are screwed to the floor pan then fold over and down behind the back seat.
It's too late for pics, but I can get some tomorrow.

Mystery solved .....
" Support, Rear Floor Covering ..... 5500 2230-1 "
I can't see that they really do anything except to create a point where rust can start .... like it did in mine!
