Unhappy At what point is it a bad idea?!

So i had originally planned on lifting my cherokee 4.5 inches and throwing some 32's under it. I got my heep back from my step dads mechanic friend tonight and he had some strong words of advice, lifting it and putting on over sized tires will require two things.... New gearing and apparently it will cause serious transmission issues?! Whats the deal on this is it true if so how high can i go without having these issues, its my only vehicle and im paying for college out of pocket and i really cant afford tranny problems whatsoever; my xj is in real clean condition as is an i dont want to hack it up and ruin things i want a good clean DD/occasional offroader. Let me know what the situation is please and thank you!?

If your just the occasional offroader I would recommend a 2" BB, its much cheaper. Im not sure about what he said, but with bigger tires you will lose MPGs. This is a good idea considering your paying for college too.

yeah the only bad thing that will come with a lift and bigger tires is less mpg's, the trannys in our jeeps can handle it no problem, as long as you dont beat the crap out of them, but im sure some guys can vouch for that though haha

See i wouldnt want anything under a 31" tire, i know id loose mpgs but the only bills i pay are college and jeep, i have a free appartment thanks to the fact i go to school and my step dad has money like a stingy jew(no offence to anyone just a stereotypical example) he is head of IT for new balance and owns my appartment. so would a 3" lift and a 31 be a safer bet then the 4.5 and 32's? and if so anyone in the MA area wana buy a set of 32" pro comp mudders with 80% tread on 15" rims theyre a little dirty and minor rust but theyre nice

Agreed, as long as you're cool with the loss of MPGs you're tranny will be fine with 32s and stock gearing. The performance, fun factor, and off road ability as well as on road economy will all benefit from a change to either 4.10s or 4.56s though once you get to tires that much bigger then stock though.
