so would me changing the oil to QS 10-30 cause the rattle to happen more? and should i run mobil 1 or rotella?

 

I have 4 qts of rottella T 10w-30 and 1 qt of royal purple 10w-30. I also run the k&n filter

 

Oil is not gonna fix rattles or chatter. You may hear it less with a thicker oil, but there is no fix. All 3 stock 4.0's ive had have had some valve/lifter chatter(sorta like a diesel). The motor i have now purrs like a kitten though. All the way up to 5k rpm(the highest ive reved it).

 

not asking for a fix i just want it how it was lol. didnt think it would effect it that much by putting in QS oil i guess i was wrong

I run Quaker State 10w30 in the summer and 5w30 in the winter and i put in half a bottle of lucas oil break in additive every oil change

x3, Don't buy into the synthetic crap or the 10k-15k-20k mile fluid BS either.

 

You ever cut a fram filter in half? I did and was filter yea right. And when it comes to oil ive always heard the opposite, to use regular oil before 100,000 then switch to a blend till 200,000 then replace seals and run full synthetic after 200,000. Sounds like a plan to me. I dont use additives or mix anything myself, i leave that to the oil chemist guys that make it.

 

I am not hating on the synthetic, I used to run a 2002 jetta turbo-diesel that only took the best synthetic diesel oil. Good synthetic oil isn't only a good idea, for some cars it's necessary. BUT... if you have been running dino oil for 100k miles, the dino gunk might be the only thing keeping you from bleeding oil. Pour in synthetic and you might have to get ready to change EVERY oil-wetted seal in the engine

That said, I want to use the best dino-oil I can find in my jeep. It already leaks oil, I don't need to make matters worse. But if I ever rebuild the engine you can bet it is getting synthetic from mile 5000 on.

On another note: does anyone have a take on using diesel oil in their gas rigs? I have a friend who swears by diesel oil in his gassers.

 

Here "really cold " is 32* For over 10 years everything I own gets straight 30w Castrol. No problem anywhere. When its "cold" I make sure to wait a minute for it to get up into the works. (262K on Jeep) Last century I could hear a gost of a rod knock on 10-40. All quiet now.

By the by, Three Homelite saws and a (2 horse) Shindawia trimmer all run strong after 20+ years on Power Punch 2 stroke mix.

 

I've been running Castrol GTX 5w-30 in cold weather and 10w-30 in warm weather for years. I've had several vehicles go over 200k without opening the motor or having any oil consumption problems. I typically use Wix or Walmart Supertech filters.

I'm sure that synthetic oil is superior, but I don't drive my vehicles hard and they don't normally see adverse driving conditions. I'm confortable using dino oil in a low tech engine like the 4.0 Jeep.

 

I'm lucky enough that Chery doesn't leak, had one, but it turned out to just be a loose bolt on the oil pan, doesn't leak so much as a drop. Unless I go on a steep incline, then I lose plenty of coolant.
