It's all mentioned in those posted links. I'm not doing a 50/50. I'm doing the 5qt Rotellat T 10w-30 and the royal purple 10w-30.
I know after reading this I'm probably sounding like a pr*ck but it's hard to express emotion over this. But there is no "attitude" or hatred at all in this post. I'm new to the oil stuff (being 16) and everywhere I looked said it was good to go!

(its an 87 and bought it after it sat for a year in a lil old lady's big red barn, literally)

Because I didn't know the condition it would be in after sitting (the jeep came from Mountains of W.Va and I used it in Ga & Va for a short while), even though i heard it start and drove it, the first thing I did was give it a tune up with all new stuff.

Plugs, wires, cap, rotor, battery, gas cleaner, radiator flush & thermostat, O2, serp belt, air filter and Oil & filter. All in all cost me about $250 +/-.
Small price (piece of mind) for a jeep that costed me $500 and had 75000 miles on it with no rust.

So, I changed the Oil and it was pretty bad coming out, probably from sitting for so long, so for its first oil change, I gave it 5qts 10-30 oil & 1qt auto trans fluid & a Fram oil filter. Nothing special oil. (The auto trans fluid is for like washing parts, ever see how clean a transmission is after 10 years w/o a change?) I Drove it for about 300 miles than gave it another oil change. When I changed out the oil it made a huge difference of the stuff that came out 2nd time round, could see the extra dirt, and when I popped the oil cap, was pretty shiny in there...

Then I put in 5qts Rotella T and 1 qt Royal Purple & Bosch Oil Filter.
Now, there is some speculation between people that our engines dont like certain filters or some people have bad luck with certain brands.

I'll say this, My Jeep is used as a rescue & recovery jeep at night. And on a 270 acre hilly farm during the day. So, I am hard on it on a semi-regular basis. So, for now, Im saying the Oil & Filter combo I have is fine, for me and my use.

Rotella T has all the good stuff our engines like, but royal purple has some of it too and is good stuff, so I split the difference.

Now I drive it enough to give it about 4 oil changes a year. So I give it:
in the summer
5qt Rotella T 10-30 and 1qt Royal Purple 10-30 and a Bosch Oil Filter

in the winter
5qt Rotella T 5w-30 & 1qt Royal Purple 5w-30 and a Bosch Oil Filter

Just remember time of year and actual temps (location) will help determine what weight oil you use.
Hope this helps some with out confusion.

If you were mixing the same brand and weight dino/synth I'd say you'd likely be fine, but different manufactures use different additive packages in their oil production. Mixing these can have adverse effects of diluting additives in the oil. This is not a good thing - the oil will wear out quicker and will not give your engine the protection intended .

That's just a few right there. I'm still new to the oil "scene" being that I'm 16. Everywhere I looked has debunked that myth. I'm not doing a 50/50. I'm going with the 5qt rotella T 10w-30 and the Royal Pruple 10w-30 1 qt. Sorry if I'm coming off as a pr*ck, but it's not intended what so ever!

ok so same brand and weight = fine. I myself buy synth-blend oil for my changes.
but mixing brands and weights = still not advised.

Royal Purple filter and Royal Purple 5w30. Although I disagree about the quieter part. My 2009 Ram was louder with RP and so is this thing. These 4.0L motors sound like there's a handful of nuts and bolts swimming in the crankcase anyway so... What the hell. I just flushed the coolant today and put Valvoline MaxLife coolant in... And it's louder yet. Maybe it's just me.

Ill probably get flamed for this but oh well. I just acquired my 90 Cherokee about 3 weeks ago,and plan on doing an oil change once I get my cylinder head back on and everything buttoned back up.

It currently has a Fram oil filter on it,which will go away and never return as long as I own this vehicle.I bought a Mopar 090 Filter from Walmart and a 5 gallon jug of 10w-30 "Supertech (Walmart house brand) along with an additional quart.

People get scared by "house brands" There is nothing to be afraid of. There are only a few places that manufacturer oil for machinery, including vehicles. The Supertech may come from the same place that makes Pennzoil (or whatever oil company you can think of),and it may be the same product with a different bottle and label on it.

I plan on doing a 5k mile oil change interval with this Jeep,as the 3k mile interval is long gone because todays oils are far more advanced than the older stuff out dads and Grandpas used.

Gotta bring in another brand that has yet to be heard of or tried or proven in Jeeps but has any one of you used Conklin Convoy brand of oils. I believe these are only available via distributor and are not readily bought at a big box store.

Has anyone given this brand a go? A lot of farmers, truckers and pickup truck owners swear on this brand of oil and a farmer friend of mine mentioned that I should try it out.

Here's the direct link to their motor oil: http://www.conklin.com/content/produ.../motoroils.cfm

The base oil is the same, but the additive packages are bottom of the barrel. It's an average oil with a lower than average TBN. In other words it's fine as long as you keep to short oil change intervals (4-5k) since the additive package will break down faster

I know you wanna change every 5,000 miles but with our Cherokee's reaching a high age, yours at 21 years old and mine at 11, why not change it at 3,000? It's what the manual calls for and so does Hayne's. Why not just do it as a precautionary.

Oh, and just to post my results... my jeep is running a lot better now with the Rotella T and Royal Purple Combo. I can't exactly describe it but it just "feels" better... espcially because I KNOW what's in there and not just some crap brand that the lube places get at 10,000 gallons at a time.

Because even the cheapest crappy oil, if it meets today's API SM rating (which it must), will last at LEAST 5000 miles. 3000 mile OCIs are a thing of the past - doing so you're just wasting your money.

Our 2001 Grand Prix (3.8) is recommended to change the oil every 3000 in the owners manual. When did manufactures start recommending 5000k intervals.
