What is a normal temp?
I bought a zirgo ZBF16. Fits great and has low 7.5 amp draw on the alternator. Only needs a 20amp fuse. Of course it's made in china though. It does the job good enough but without the holes in the thermostat i'm not sure it would be enough. Probably worth spending the exta $35 to get the ZBF16S that has 200 more cfm.

Back to the OP's question have you serviced the cooling system lately cleaning/flushing system including the heater core, what does the radiator look like? If not start there along with a new thermostat a 195*. Check the fan clutch for proper operation and e-fan switch/operation.
Most people at this age on their XJ replace the entire cooling system radiator, water pump, fan clutch, hose's, etc. just a good idea most of the time just due to the age of these parts.

OK, fun times! I really appreciate the feedback.
I replaced the relay and the fan still wouldn't come on. Just today I jumped power to the fan and WOW, it works!!!!! so I figured my problem is the temperature sending unit. While searching for it under the hood I let the engine run up to normal temperature, 210. I had the AC on full. I got frustrated and pounded on the top of the e-fan with my fist and it TURNED ON! The temp had started to creep above 210 and it promptly lowered back down.
However, the fan won't stay on. . . went back to the Jeep and the temp was 215 with no e-fan. I was able to tap the top of the fan shroud and it came back on momentarily but fizzled back off. When I power it directly it turns on. Would my problem be the temp sending unit? loose connection somewhere? Any help is appreciated, thanks. By the way, does anyone have a photo of the temp sending unit or location?
