What to look out for in a XJ?
Hey all,
A friend of mine is thinking about getting an XJ. I fully support her idea, but I don't know anything other than I loved the one my sister had about seven years ago.
So what are some common problems/things to look out for?
Also, her budget is $4000, so some ideas as to the kind of car she could get?
Thanks in advance!

She has picked the right vehicle to get. I would definilty look for a 4.0 l engine and 4wd.
Other than that it is up to her. What to look out for. Where are you located... Salt belt RUST.
There are a few things you can use to lower the price of a Jeep. Rear main seal area is a good place to find a leak and knock almost 800 bucks off the price of a used vehicle. the very front exhaust manifold bolt is always broke... You can knock some price off for it also if it is lol.
But what to stay away from is mainly just RUST... It is a disease that plagues salt belt jeeps.
What I would do in the future is before you buy take some pics and get as much info about the jeep as possible and let us know. We will definitly tell ya if you are getting screwed.
I like old Jeeps but since this is for a female I would look for 97+ models. Have fun Jeep shopping. Get her to join our site once said shopping is completed if she has any problems we can usually walk her through easy fixes.

Rust in floor boards.. (Crawl under XJ or pull back carpet)
Busted seat frames (seats will rock)
Busted exhaust manifold (I believe its the #6 cylinder tube, it sounds like a clicking noise)
