Default What is this little bugger (image) that draws 300mA when everything is off ?

Hello from a newbie from Norway!

I have had my 1996 Jeep Cherokee XJ since new!!
And as it has grown in years I have turned into a mechanic.
It is a diesel 2,5 so I guess the engine is a little unfamiliar to you guys.

BUT I don't think this question is engine related.

Can anyone please explain to me what this little bugger (image) is that draws 300mA (from fuse #9) when everything is off ?
I found it directly beneath the dashboard under the steering wheel.

Kind Regards,
Jan

You sir have found the thermal switch for that light or lighted ring around the ignition.

It stays on until it gets hot enough to break contact and then it unlatches.

It's supposed to get hot as all hell.

You can't tell the difference removing it makes when it's light out.

Thanks

Now I only need to put it back in and try to see that it switches off. I suspect it is only taking away some current and doesn't switch off as I have found the car with flat battery constantly the last month.

I have now tested this thing and it gets warm, but not wery warm. And after it has been constantly on eating 300mA for 30 minutes I think it is faulty.
The trouble is the Jeep professionals in Norway didnt have a clue. So in order to try to find a replacement I guess I need a serial number...
Anyone got what I'm looking for?

Kind Regards,
Jan

Here's a great video to check to see if you can locate a Parasitic Draw. I know that it help me find my problem with a discharging battery. I hope it helps.

I've wondered the same thing as mine is hot all the time, and after hudsons explanation, I'm still wondering.

What does break contact mean, and unlatch?

What do you mean by never tell the difference, can someone rephrase what he said, but in English?

He means that if you leave it out, you just won't have the lighted ring by your key cylinder. Either replace it or leave it out.
