Due to the fact that the toe adjustment is set via your driver side tie rod end.
Ok here simply put. This is a procedure on a alignment machine for a xj.
Put xj on lift
Install heads
Compensate heads
Set caster/camber
Set toe via adjuster sleeve near drivers front tire
Adjust steering wheel to straight via adjuster sleeve on drag link.

But also like stated above if you put you column together wrong you can't just adjust it since your box will not be centered. you need to fix that first.

adjusting that sleeve only affects what's above that adjuster.
nothing below that adjuster is affected. think about it, the steering box/pitman arm is the pivot that is very easily turned, if it were solid, than yes, the toe would be affected, but it's not, so all that will happen is the steering wheel gets adjusted.

go ahead and adjust it all you want, you will only move the steering wheel one way or the other.

as mentioned, the tie rod adjusts the toe, simply by pushing the two apart or pulling them in when that center link is adjusted.

Fix it right. Get the tires straight, pull the steering wheel and put it where it's suppose to be. Then drive it. If it's not centered like you want adjust the drag link.

Left and right tires are tied together with center link and two TREs. This controls toe in and would only change if you changed the lenght of the center link. Drag link runs to one side from steering box. When you move the steering wheel one way or the other it effectively changes the distance of the far end of the drag link from the steering box. Longer or shorter depending on the direction turned. So if you held the steering wheel still so it couldn't move and adjust the drag link longer or shorter it would have the same effect as turning the steering wheel and move both tires together.

^x2 I was wondering when someone would finally come up with the fix for his problem. The problem started when he replaced the steering column, so either reinstall the column correctly or like Mike Mike stated remove the steering wheel and reinstall it centered.
Simple, easy, peasey.

Hmm I had thought that the drag link didn't affect toe at all also, but someone told me recently that since it's connected to the knuckle it does. Never made much sense to me either, guess they were wrong Thanks for clearing that up
