Default What do I need to fix my door / door hinges

Hi there everyone,

Its time for the next issue to be fixed on my kinda restoration of my cherokee. My drivers door sorta "falls" when I open it. when it is open, it can be lifted slightly (sorta loose I guess you could say) and when opening, it makes a very loud poping sound twice. the middle bracket between the hinges, the holder for that pin is elongated and is more of an oval now, and the poping comes from that bin bouncing in the elongated hole while the door is opening. does anyone know what all is needed to fix my door?

Being that mine is a 2001, does all that still apply though?

Yeah, that doesn't look like the issue applying to me, my hinges are not cracking, and where the checkstrap pin goes, that holder is elongated

Just did this on my '99. Dorman industries supplies hinge pins/bushings for many vehicles, get a pair through your auto parts dealer. $30 total for 2! You will have to cut your old ones out with a dremel as they are flared on both ends. On mine I found it easier to unbolt the door first which entailed removing the panel & disconnecting all the wiring first.

2 people will be needed to manhandle the door & adjust it after, remember which shims went where.

Only other option is complete new hinges from the dealer @$150 ea.

As far as the strap & pin go, I went to the junk yard & took one of the brackets off of a rear door assembly, its the same & most of the front door ones will be ovaled like yours is.

The door is very quiet & smooth now, its a job really worth doing on your XJ.

Not a problem, part #38439

You'll need 2 per door.

On my 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport the driver's side door has the same issue. The play seems to be only in the top hinge at this point though. Do you think it would save some hassle to just to the top hinge pin replacement by itself, without removing the door? (with having it supported, of course). My thought is that it would reduce issues with alignment.

Recently had same problem with my own. I welded it back on...Just had the door on a jack and welded back in place. It doesn't fall anymore!
