Default what causes door rust?

I've got door rust. Who doesn't right? I'm curious as to what causes this rust. Is it the pinch weld at the bottom of the door and water seems to collect there? Is water running down the window into the door and building up on the inside; so the rust is working it's way from the inside out? Is there another source that I'm not thinking of? I want to fix this but I don't want it returning.

Indiana causes rust, lol. Seriously in my opinion it's due to the salt from our roads getting into the large seams between the doors and the body. I was looking at mine yesterday and noticed all the salt and road grime that collected inside the door jams and it made me go through the car wash this morning. I usually wash mine at least once a week in winter. My last XJ got so bad on the drivers door that I had to replace it. It was a two door and hard to find around here. I got one online from California that was rust free and had it painted to match. This spring I plan on using a small wire brush inside the bottom of my doors to clean of the surface rust and re-paint in an effort to save the doors. I don't think a lot of people ever look under the doors for rust until it's too late.

Cracked window guides also allow water to run inside door where it sit and rot from inside out.

Check and make sure your drain holes on the bottom of the door are clear.

I blame road salt over the years. Mine is a 1990 here's the rust I found when I took the trim off in the summer of 2013. Then I cut it out and put diamond plate in its place. Then the diamond plate fell off today :/

getting in and out, salt on your shoes, or just having salt slush getting caught between the door and jam.. I just replaced a door on my bmw because of that..

Run some lag screws through it and put it back on. Superglue doesn't work.

I'll look into lag screws. I used rivets to hold it and black RTV to seal it up. It seems to be working well on the other doors.
