kind of a silly thread...i guess the question should be 'what years was what upgraded to the best available to date'. Wiki probably has the engine, HP/TRQ, major upgrades for all generations and years. Search it...
I am a fan of old school. I like the round gauges, simplicity of the vehicle, and other than standard leaks on any vehicle, Im very happy with my 87. My 91 before it was also immaculate with no leaks or anything, until a kid ran a stop sign when i was doing 60mph....
plus older ones dont have all that electrical crap...simple harness/engine setup..plenty of power in the entire line up of inline 6's.

I have owned every year cherokee but the 2000 and 2001. I would suggest 95-99 any are fine I have beat the hell out of every one and all retired with well over 250,000 miles (except for the 2.5L). Have a 95 96 and 97 right now.

They were all a great year, of course 89 is the best lol, 91 and up had improved cylinder head on the 4.0, HP was up due to better breathing and intake and throttle body improvements, I'm running 475000+ km on my original 89 4.0L with AW4 trans, 231 transfer, 3.53 gear, lots of rust, many parts transplants, continuous rewiring, just lovin it.

what i would say to you get the one you feel the best with,4.0L is one of the best out there,if you get one withthe things you like, take it,cause in the end everybody says their jeep is best,so why not make it your best? all tho if you are in to off road teer clear of ABS brakes, that would be my say on this, cause in the end you will be the one driving it,they all work good, but you are the only one that can make it go places, with the right add ons.
