What axle do I have? 88 cherokee
I am new to jeeps and have an 88 cherokee 2 door 4.0... Long story short, the pass side half shaft just came out while driving 45 mph on a bridge, not fun (the wheel rolled down the rest of the bridge and hit an oncoming car, the half shaft punctured the drivers side twice) . Anyway I can't find axle or gear ratio specs anywhere on my jeep to be able to find another identical axle.
please help

Also, i bought a jeep for parts that i was told has 3.55s in it and was planning on swapping both axles into my "good jeep" but i'd rather find another rear instead

I need a bit more information.
I'd say there's about 95% chance that you have a Dana35 rear axle and a CAD Dana 30 up front.
A Dana 35 is a C-clip axle. That means that if the shaft breaks there's nothing to hold it in.
If it were a Dana 44 in the back the shaft never would have come out.
You're saying the rear wheel and shaft came out, correct?
4.0 automatic Jeeps came with 3.55 gears stock. The only ones that had different gears are the 4 bangers.
If your parts mobile has a 4.0 auto then you can pull the axle out of it slap it in the other one and be done.

and i heard something about if you had a tow package it could have 3.73 gears?
we also just spun the axle with with the drivers side shaft and used chalk lines to do the ratio and it appeared to be like 3.10-20 ish.
also the parts jeep is a 4.0 auto

If its a stick than I think its 3.07 and if it was the rear that came out than you likely have a d35, if your parts jeep is auto then its 3.55 and won't work unless you swap both

The '88 xj would NOT have a c-clip Dana 35, '90 was first year for the c-clip 35. So, i think you don't have the factory axle for your xj, something swapped in. If you can take a quick look at the diff cover, it should have a tag on one of the bolts that denotes the gear ratio. And if you can take a pic of the diff so we can tell you what you diff you have instead of guessing.

Dana 35 non c-clip - 27 spline, 1.18" diameter shafts, 7.58" ring gear, 2.62" axle tube - used 84-89
Dana 35 c-clip - 27 spline, 1.18" diameter shafts, 7.58" ring gear, 2.62" axle tube - used 90-01
Chrysler 8.25 - 27 spline, 1.17" diameter shafts, 8.25" ring gear, 3" axle tube - used 91-96
Chrysler 8.25 - 29 spline, 1.21" diameter shafts, 8.25" ring gear, 3" axle tube - used 97-01
Dana 44 non c-clip - 30 spline, 1.31" diameter shafts, 8.5" ring gear, 2.75" axle tube - used 87-89 on some (not all) XJs equipped with towing package.
Note: Dana 35 axles sometimes referred to as Dana 35C - The "C" does not stand for c-clip. It stands for "custom" meaning it came from Dana unfinished.
Note: 8.25 axles - none of these axles were used on XJ's with ABS brakes. If you have ABS, you have the Dana 35. Without ABS you could have either axle. 8.25 axles are c-clip.
Gearing
3.07 - used with 4.0L engine / manual transmission
3.31 - only available on older (pre87?) 2 door XJs with "Fuel Economy" package
3.55 - used with 4.0L engine / automatic transmission
3.73 - found in some XJs with the towing package
4.10 - used with 2.5L engine usually, and older XJs with the "Off-Highway Vehicle" package.

So I had a 3.07 non c clip d35. Swapped to a 3.55 c8.25. Only did the rear so far and the truck is definitely peppier. In addition I added 3 inch blocks to the rear and when I do the front I have spring spacers and will be a on about 6 inches of lift all around on 33s

I am going to swap in the front on tuesday and obviously not using 4x4 till then haha. and the axle is a non c clip, and came apart just like I said, I haven't taken the diff cover off yet to see what actually happened but the shaft came straight out the tube while driving 40-45mph on the highway.
