So if my 01 xj goes through the engine code check sequence because my check engine light is always on it doesn't run through gauges, or 111111 through 9999999 TYPICALLY!! tried it dozens of times and I would always get 2.5 flashed on the screen then nothing. Today it ran through all the way after I drained the power. What does the 2.5 mean? Thanks yall!

If you are trying to pull trouble codes in the odometer using the key trick, it won't work on your Heep. You have to use a scanner or code reader plugged into the Data Link Connector to pull the OBD II codes.

2.5? Do you have a 2.5 L engine? LOL

Like CCKen said you need a scanner to read the codes I think only 96 and older you can pull the code with the key.

I think it's the miles driven since the last time the odo trip button was reset.

What are you still looking for help with? You got it to run the cluster self test. That is just to make sure the gauges are working. Get a code reader and pull the codes to see why the CEL is on.

^^This^^
If you have a CEL you need to have a scanner to read why you have a CEL. You can get the codes read for free at just about any chain parts store such as Auto Zone, O'Reilly or Advanced. That is the only way you are going to know why your CEL is on. No matter how many time you try to get the codes with the key method it is not going to work...

I thought you were still chasing a problem since you never said anything other then you needed help. Anyways I have never seen the 2.5 on my 98 when doing the gauge check. You now have me curious on what it means. If you figure it out let us know.

Rest the Odo trip button back to zero and try it again.

If it comes back it could mean that you have 2.5 years remaining in the life of your Flux Capacitor.

This is my favorite explanation yet! yeah that flux capacitor is getting pretty old at this point. I was thinking it meant it was 2.5 muffler bearings down from a full set. either way Ill scour the interweb and let yall know
