Welded rear ends or spools were really only designed for one use. Going straight. Generally for our purposes, they are a bad deal.

Not faster, the same - A spool or welded diff will make both tires spin exactly the same number of revolution and as such in say a right turn, the chassis will unload on the right side ideally allowing the right tire to spin on the pavement rather than break any of the internal components.

I had a Blazer with a Dana 60 in the rear and welded the spider-gears and it was non stoppable when I went wheeling BUT I broke allot of axles with 40 inch mudders on the street. I also went through back tires like crazy but it was FUN

and have a welded rear in my xj now.
and will be putting a spooled rear in my new xj soon
my jeep(s) are/have been daily drivers, rock crawlers, and weekend warriors.
nothing wrong with them. but most everything is a tradeoff
its cheap, reliable traction (no locker to break). but increased tire wear and "chirping" on corners
it changes the way the jeep handles on the street slightly, but its not a bad change. turning difficulty is a little harder but barely noticeable.
ill take a spool over an open diff any day

so which is better locking the from or rear first? I'm going to lock both but not at the same time
