OK I honestly don't know what it means when someone says that their axle is "welded" what does it mean??

It means they screwed it up..........


They welded the spider gears inside the diff for a full time axle effect instead of installing a locker

if its a strictly off road rig then its not terrible to do, but if it touches the pavement its not a good idea.

well one day the rig will be strictly off road but when that happens the XJ will have lockers front and back

essentially yes they do. a locker replaces the planetary gear, which allows the two wheels to turn at different speeds from one another. when you weld your planetary gear, both the wheels will spin with eachother at the same revs, hence "locking" the axle.
