Default weird reverse and drive issues

My xj has some weird thing when i put in drive or reverse. I press the gas to move and the engine revs up like its moving but it doesnt move. If I keep holding the gas it suddenly starts to move. What do you guys think is causing this. Oh and it normally happens after I stop in reverse or drive after moving already. Thanks in advance!

X2 add fluid.

But I'd check for leaks. That fluid has to be going somewhere

ok thanks for the replies. At the time I bought it, it had been sitting for over a year because the previous owner died. Im guessing some seal may have busted or something? What is the most common place to leak?

Crawl under it. Look at the pan seal and the output shaft seal. The pump could be leaking but sometimes you can't see that externally.
