Either the belt is burning because it is loose, or the compressor is siezed up.

Could be your wallet? :P

Like Turbo XJ it sounds like you mean belt squealing. Does it make this noise any other time? Say, after it rains, if the battery is low, or if it sat for a while.

The AC compressor is driven by the same belt as the water pump, alternator, fan, and power steering. Between the compressor itself and the pulley with the belt is a clutch that engages to send power to the compressor every time you turn on the AC.

Most likely it's the A/C compressor making the noise, don't worry about it until it craps out.

How well does the ac work? Is it cold? Mine squeals too, and my ac has gotten worse. If his compressor isn't running very well, might he not have cold ac?

Well the only reason im sure there is, is because when my tension pulley went they asked if I had a/c to get me a new one because the belt wraps around something to do with the a/c. But they could have been wrong and I could be looking like an idiot right now haha

Well there is a belt wrapped around the pulley attached to the compressor, but it is always spinning, even with a/c off, so I don't know if it has anything to do with it.

Well the belt spins with the motor, it wont stop when the a/c is off.

True, but what does it have to do with the air conditioning? I'm just unsure

If you notice with the engine running the compressor pulley is actually 2 parts. When the compressor is not engaged the center portion is stationary, when engaged "click" it rotates.

Um im sure something but I cant tell ya man thats where my knowledge runs out . Maybe the belt keeps it going all the time, but when you kick on the a/c it will allow the belt to transfer the power threw the compressor and start the a/c.
