Yea I know that. I just wasn't sure if the belt had anything to do with the a/c or if the pulley was just attached to the compressor. So to deal with squealing like the o.p., how do you tighten the belt?

Engine off
Loosen idler pulley bolt
snug adjuster bolt "a couple turns" you will feel it take up tension on the belt
Tighten idler pulley bolt.
Start engine, turn on headlights & A/C, stab the gas pedal.
Did the belt squeal? if yes repeat until it does not, if not your done.

When you turn your air conditioning on it engages the clutch in the compressor, allowing it to be driven by the belt. i was actually on here searching this topic because mine is purring and making my belt squal when i turn it on. sounds to me like yours is doing the same thing. i'm thinkin our compressors are goin out man:/
