Default Weird noise from gas tank???

Ok, so my problem is, I have a 98 Cherokee, 4.0, AW4, and I have a weird noise coming from, the best I can tell at least, the gas tank area. So, when I am sitting in the drivers seat, you can hear what sounds like water hitting a paper plate. Literally, it sounds like a liquid. However, when I hop out and get under the truck...if looking toward the front of the truck, the left rear of the gas tank is where the noise is coming from. However, it doesn't sound like water dripping then...it sounds more like something clinking/moving with the fuel in the tank.

There is no smell of gas so I'm fairly certain I don't have a leak...and it can do it with or without the switch on so I'm assuming that the fuel pump is ok as well (might be jumping the gun on that but just a guess). Does anyone have any insight on what it could/might be?

Any thoughts are definitely welcome.

I have the same thing in my 97.

I figure it's the float level sensor in the gas tank. Didn't figure it mattered

My 97 does the same thing. When I pulled the tank to replace the fuel pump I stuck my arm in the tank and at the filler neck there is a plastic ball that is rolling back and forth. I wasn't sure if it was suppose to be stationary by maybe a spring or not. If I rock my jeep by hand I can hear the ball moving back forth. Not saying that this is the same noise that you are hearing, but just wanted to throw that out.

Mine sounds like it is percolating, like an old coffee maker. Aulthough I suppose a percolating gas tank is probably not good

Thanks...yeah, I thought about pulling the tank myself and taking a look but I'm in school so don't really have the space or time or tools for that matter to do that. That is exactly what mine sounds like...like a ball is floating in the take hitting stuff. I guess it should still be fine to drive but it's just weird sounding.

Wonder how you fix it b/c I would assume that it should sound like that, lol

Mine does that too, after you drive somewhere and turn it off you can really hear it, does it for like 10 seconds after you turn it off
