Your grandma was over charged. It's shops like that one that give all mechanics a bad name.

Not to be an ***** but there is a sync procedure that can be performed on a lot of chrysler vehicles. That being said it doesn't need to be performed after a crank sensor replacement, but some techs will. It involves the use of chryslers drbIII scanner and indexing the distributor within a degree range, keeping it as close to zero as possible. (as shown on the scanner)

but the labour seems quite high, our shop would quote .6 of an hour to diagnose, ans at the most 1 hour to install. shop rate $90 an hour.

I'd just like to chime in that this is like the 4th or 5th 'did I get scammed' thread in about a week or two that I personally have seen....now. no offense to shops or the people that use them, hell maybe I'm just a paranoid fool, but before going to a shop I always know what I need done and what is involved. Google is your friend. For example my sister has a 00 bug that recently needed a rear axle beam, so I looked up estimated costs, procedure, called several mechanics, and when taking it to the shop to be done we discussed price prior to it being done...knowledge is power, get as much of it as you can, and be confident when talking to the mechanics!

Good advice. Do some research people. I do all of my own work, saves me a bundle. It helps that I've been a mechanic for close to thirty years.

You can't index a distributor on a 4.0L Jeep engine btw. I have heard that sometimes a ECM may need to "re-learn" how to run the engine. I suppose it's possible to do this with a scan tool, but usually it happens automatically by just driving the Jeep around. And maybe that's all they did.

I would recommend you find out if there is a Customer Service contact for Chrysler/Jeep of America. Contact them and tell them your side of the story.

Also, it would be wise to get an estimate of the repair cost before having it done, when possible.

Not to downgrade mechanics by any means but...I feel that people should learn thier vehicles to some extent. When it comes down to it, working on anything comes down turning a wrench to a certain tightness, in a certain or not order, and following specs...but I'm not against paying someone else to take care of some things :P

I totally agree. Everybody should know how to fix their junk. Especially a Jeep owner.

The CPS is a pain to change. I think it took me about a hour to replace mine. A lot of that time was going from under the hood back & forth underneath the XJ TRYING to find the best was to get to it.

Again, it's a pain to get to.

Is it worth paying someone else top $ to change it? It all depends on the individual.

In my case, I had no choice but to change my own. I like saving money, when I can & it is not that hard to swap out most parts.

I'm really good and experienced in changing them, I've done quite a few on many models, would you hand me $500 because of that?

Hmmm..... NO.

$500 a hour. Your rate seems a little steep, even for a dealership.

I think I'd do it myself & save about $480 (1 hour x $20 a hour).

What I meant by "individual" was, if they could not perform the work themselves or had cash flowing from their **** & didn't want to fool with doing it.

The OBD system might need a number start/stop cycles to reset it's puter' after it's been powered down. (it actually "learns"). Up to 40? Most procedures start with "disconnect the power". I'm pretty sure powering down is not necessary to change a CPS.

NOW, I did indeed read in an OBD FSM (and since I don't have the later it must have been OBD-I), that it is recomended that the teck take it out a few times to make sure it's PCM has adjusted enough to run. "Sync" is a pretty general term. I'll take a minute to look for that......

Maybe that is why they.... well, screwed you.

Well, I failed. If anyone has the same free FSM I downloaded, (years ago), the "pay dirt" is on page 65, the directory for the fuel system that includes the CPS and the system operation...

I'm sure I saw somewhere that the teck should take it out for a run or two after powering down the PCM..I think. Anyway that's my best guess at what he meant by "Sink" Anyway you got overcharged. Mine cost about $70, (bought local, off the shelf), and doesn't take more than an hour to change.
