Default waterpump LHD is standard rotation or reverse?

Hi guys,

Could you check one thing for me regarding your LHD's?
Looking to buy new waterpump from Rockauto, and I need a reverse rotation (1997 6 cyl 4.0 ltr auto) in my RHD. I know the rotation is determined by the belt (how it runs), not LHD or RHD (as far as I know) but I know the Bosch pump is reverse rotation, and the Omix-Ada is listed as 'standard' rotation, both listed under the Cherokee 1997 on the site.

In the LHD Cherokee (1997 4.0 ltr), is the waterpump standard or reverse rotation with you guys?
(I could buy the Bosch, but would prefer the Omix Ada if possible)

Cheers from D-U, thanks in advance.

Standard rotation is reverse rotation. The pump system is referred to in the FSM as a "reverse" system. There is supposed to be an "R" stamped on one of the pump impeller blades but I've never seen an "R" stamped on a pump blade, even the original factory pump I took off didn't have one.

I just checked the FSM. With both the RHD and LHD 4.0 engines the water pump turns in a counter clockwise direction, as viewed from the front of the engine.

Here's an image of the "reverse" rotating water pump.

Thanks CC, exactly what I was needing. I looked in the FSM as well, and the part cataloque, which stated only for the engine type and didnt specify between RHD or LHD. I got confused, since in antoher thread it was mentioned that different belt routing influenced the rotation direction.
But if standard rotation actually means reverse rotation, I'll go with the Omix Ada waterpump now (is 'standard' rotation, the Bosch one is 'reversed', see the reason for confusion there?). Again, thanks for your info.

I think the use non-reverse rotation pumps are so rare that vendors just started calling the actual "Reverse Rotating Water Pump" a Standard pump.

I bought a pump at NAPA that was marked as "Standard Rotation". I checked the impeller and it was the proper configuration for reverse rotation.

Wrong belt routing will change the pump direction of rotation. Check your FSM, Section 7, it has a Caution statement about proper belt routing and water pump rotation. Section 7 also shows the belt routing for RH drive.

There may or may not be an "R" stamped on the impeller...just make sure the impeller looks EXACTLY like the one that Ken posted. Per the FSM, rotation viewed from the front is anti-clockwise on both RHD and LHD.
