Question water pump rubbing against cyl wall...

This is what the impeller did to the inside of my motor, I put it back together and it seems to run fine, but is this something I should worry about?

I'm pretty sure that didn't come from the water pump, i believe its caused by the machine process the block goes through.

If it doesn't look like the impeller could move at all and it still feels firm then I'd say you're okay. You could take a wad of puddy and make a ball, stick it to the inside wall there and push the water pump in and see how much of an impression it makes in the puddy. It'll give you a good idea how close it is.

I just looked at the two picures of this area in my "distributor/timing" thread and I see the same machine marks on the inside of the block.

I cant cont the number of times ive seen this before and not just on xj's. It is caused by your water pump, not extremely serious but not ideal. Many times its caused by not using a gasket and getting by with rtv

If you owned it since it was new, then rule out missing gasket, If not....

I'm positive that's what it is. I've had enough of these 4.0s apart to verify that. They're all that way.

Cool thanks, I would hate to think there is something wrong with it.

Did the pump impeller look something like this? LOL As long as pumps don't leak, just presume they're fine. Seen that posted a few times. Bet that motor ran hot AND the heater didn't work.
