yes you will need to pull that fan off. if it is held by the stock screws it will be a 8mm socket IIRC.

I'm not convinced that is the reason for the belt squeeling.

Question help!

I've got the same issue. I recently replaced the serp. belt. now one of my pulleys squeals really bed. I dont know if its the water pump pulley or not. It's hard as hell to find any freakin info on what the pump pulley looks like under the hood. I actually bought a new h20 pump today, got it home and the new one doesn't look like whats there now... I dont even know if im looking at the right thing under the hood.... soimeone please help. The pulley that's squealing isright under what I think is my existing pump... it's got a radiator hose connected to it, so im guessing that is my existing pump.....

Not sure if that would be your problem. If the belt sits snug on the pulley it should be alright. I would say water pump, i did mine on my 89 cherokee 2 months ago, along with the idler pulley. It shouldnt be too hard if its where mine was (right in front of the block)
1. Release tension on your belt (mine is 5 bolts on the p/s pump)
2. take the belt off
3. take the old water pump off
4. go over the housing where it sat with a blade to get the old gasket completely off
5. put the new pump on, patch her up add coolant, and fire her up!
- I would recommend using a sealant on the new one you put in, and make sure you dont have any air bubbles in your cooling system, thought i was clear and ended up overheating for a couple seconds because of it

I agree with G O D... i don't think that is your problem. but its not a good thing. if the noise came after the belt was put on then i would think thats your prboblem. from what Ive read i think its mainly an adjustment issue.... but either way. i would take the belt back off and check all the pulleys for play/looseness. most of the time you can feel the problem, but I would adjust your belt.

a good rule of thumb is to tighten it to where you cant twist it past 90* very easy... but 3/4-1" play up/down is a good rule of thumb too...

i have both loosened and tightened the belt as much as i could. neither seemed to make a difference. im going to replace the p/s pulley and see what that does since that needs to be done and i already bought the part anyways. if that doesnt do anything then i will move on to the water pump.

Belts squeel because of one thing.

Rubber moving against metal that isn't. Or the opposite, Metal moving against rubber that isn't.

That crack isn't going to do either.

Take the part back before you install it and can't get your money back.

Default update

replaced p/s steering pulley, which was also slightly cracked towards the middle along with that chip. figured it probably wasnt going to help(it didnt), but i felt more comfortable replacing it anyways. still squealing, so next step is taking to a shop for diagnosis/replacing of the water pump. which is really what i should have done all along. thanks for all of yalls advice/opinions. one thing i did learn, how to take/put on/loosen/tighten the belt in a no time haha

I'm glad you've narrowed it down.

Please let us know what the shop charges to replace the water pump, or whatever they want to replace to stop the squeeling.

good to hear for now, i still think that you didn't go wrong with replacing the power steering pulley. It did for sure fix mine. then again I also had dents along with the crack on mine.
