Default Water pump install Question

I replaced my water pump and inlet tube recently, but I'm leaking out of the threads between the two. I knew I should have added a thread sealer but it was 95 degrees and I'm stupid. What thread sealer should I use when I disassemble the whole front end again?

Thanks,
s

If I were you I would remove the metal pipe and replace it with a brass barbed fitting and run the hose from that point to the heater core. When I did mine I just wrapped the threads with a little teflon and never had a problem since and that was 3 years ago.

Any pipe tape or teflon tape should be fine.

Teflon has worked for me. Once I used the 492 because I had it laying around from the #11 headbolt. Worked fine but it was overkill.

This^

Cut the pipe short so you can remove it without removing the water pump again, then remove it and replace it with a barbed fitting and run a longer hose.

Saves a good bit of work.

While my sexuality is not in question, I damn near want to give you a hug right now for saving me the pain of doing my water pump twice. I never would have thought of that. By barbed fitting you're talking about anything I can get from Home Depot. Do I need anything special here? Also, Ipresume the longer inlet tube with the 90 degree bend in it that I would be eliminating was designed to keep the hose off of the motor. do I need to worry about heat or the replacmeent tube resting on the motor?

Yes you can pick up the barb fitting at any hardware store. If I'm not mistaken the the barbed end (hose end) is 5/8. Just unscrew it and take it with you to the store to get the right thread size. Also pick up some bulk hose in the length you will need. When you put it all back together just put a couple nylon tie wraps to keep the hose off of anything and to keep it from rubbing against anything.

Don't you have to take the WP off to remove the inlet tube?

Not if he cuts the pipe short enough so it will turn and wont hit anything.

Where do you get this fitting? I've been to every place in town and the best I can do to is get a 3/8 male-3/8 male nipple to a 3/8 female - 1/2 female coupling to a 1/2 male - 5/8 barbed connector. It is nearly $20 of brass. What are the odds the hose would fit on the cut end of the inlet tube if I used two hose clamps? I'd imagine the water pressure would cause the hose to pop off since the hose end isn't ribbed for my protection/enjoyment.

Also, how would you suggest I cut the old pipe? I'm not too keen on getting shavings in my coolant.

I used regular off the shelf blue teflon tape when changing out the temp sensor. I was worried that it'd get hot and melt off, but after a few thousand miles in 90+ temps the tape looks as new as the day I put it on.

Really? I know that I picked one up at Lowes for one of my other XJ's and the last one for my current XJ from Auto Zone. And I'm not mistaken I only paid a couple of dollars for it.
