In fact, the engineer's preference. There is clearly a reason they used that inlet pipe instead of a longer rubber hose. Always stick to OEM design if you don't understand why something is.

Like this? That pipe is only $11 but you can't install it with the thermostat housing on there.

Engineers never change anything, do they. Couldn't find the tube locally....had to be ordered. Besides, a little longer hose moves hot heater hoses away from an already very hot valve train.
