Changed water pump without thermostat ran fine with thermostat running hot is it safe to run it without thermostat?? Told several different stories one it's ok and it's not ok to run it with or without thermostat. 94xj 4.0 2wd what else could cause it to run hot? Changed head gasket water pump the only thing else I know is thermostat. Wasn't getting any water circulation took hoses off and cleaned out now getting good circulation. What else can go wrong

So I don't really understand where you are at now...you threw parts at it and did/didn't fix it? I wouldn't run it without a tstat, why not just replace the tstat? Or did you already?

What is the cooling system history? Has it been running OK and then started over heating? You just bought the Jeep? The t-stat needs to be in place for the engine to run properly. First thought is the lower hose is collapsed and won't let water form the rad into the engine.

No I haven't replaced the thermostat yet. Here's my story I have 94 xj with 4.0 2wd started blowing white smoke out the tail pipe ran almost hot got home and parked it, figured warped cracked head, a buddy said maybe head gasket blown, so I replaced head gasket ran it, started running hot took top radiator hose off no water circulation replaced water pump got circulation with new water pump, without thermostat runs fine with thermostat started running hot. That's where I'm at? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

So, the only cooling system part that's been changed/replaced is the water pump?
What about replacing the rad, fan clutch, t-stat, rad cap and give it a good flush before going back together. Drain coolant once, replace all the components and re-fill. Git 'er done. If there was ever an area "to just throw parts at", the cooling system is it.

Fan clutch is on the main cooling fan. Replace the clutch if not sure how old it is.....it is a very important component in the cooling system.
