My little baby has not been driven or started for a few months until today. She is my emergency backup vehicle in case the daily driver goes down. I have my van but its limited to a few mile radius before it over heats.
There was nothing wrong with the Jeep when it was parked other than a few more minor issues but that's for another time.
I am thinking the water pump has failed based on water leaking out which I can't be 100% sure where but the engine sounds rough which was not that way when parked.
I will attach drop box links to the image and the red arrow shows where water is there but was not able to catch it leaking but when running it leaks even more.
I also will include two links for video's. One the small one is of the engine bay and the other is a longer video from the front of the vehicle where you can see water just a dripping.
Well the noise is bad as well if you watched the video. Not sure what a weep hole is but I'll find out. When not on the leak is not bad it would still drain a radiator in a few days unless at some point it wouldn't due to water levels and science stuff. When it runs it's just coming on out and there's that horrid noise sounds like something grinding.
Pull your surpentine belt off and spin the water pump pulley by hand. Does it move freely? Can you rock it back and forth and get movement? Try the other accessoriy pullies as well. Finally, run the engine for a moment with the belt off. Does the noise go away?
I know I said I would check the other day but I was unable too. I did check the things today. I could not get down on the ground to check the weep hole (still honestly don't know what that is).
I took off the serpentine bel and turned every pulley on engine, alternator, etc. All of them turned easily except the big one at the bottom I guess that's attached to the engine.
but the pulley with the fan attached which I believe is where the water pump is, was the only pulley that rocked back and forth which is not right.
Started the engine and noise went away.
I had also filled up the radiator before starting the vehicle. I could not see any water dripping out at that time (maybe didn't give it enough time) but once I started the engine there was plenty of water.
So I assume this all indicates the water pump as that problem?
the video's I've seen for water pump replacement has the fan attached to it (same as my 97 b2500 dodge van)
a search online for that question yeilds this result
"On the 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee (whether equipped with the 4.0L inline-six or 5.2L/5.9L V8 engine), the mechanical cooling fan and fan clutch are directly attached to the front of the water pump shaft"
all the pulley's turned freely except the large one at the bottom that's turned by the engine. The fan/water pump pully has back and forth wobble.
my real question now other than if there's anyone else that does not think it's the water pump.
given it was super low on water/coolant.
when getting ready to replace the water pump should I remove the radiator too, thinking about it to give it a good washing and such. What do I need to look out for?
Due to health I would have to work really slow something that should be done quickly could easily take me more than a week unless I have days I can not get out to do anything. Is there any issue leaving the stuff open/off but blocking off where the water pump goes on (if needed) and lines that go into the radiator. I think the lines that goes to the radiator are just transmission lines if I am correct the ac lines go in front of the radiator. Although it has a leak so I believe it needs to be vacuumed and a separate post on it to ask about it.
Ah, that's why I was scratching my head about the fan pulley versus the water pump pulley. If they're shared on the Grand, then it's probably time for a new water pump.
