im starting a thread on this because it is a major issue on theses jeeps rusting floorboards.
on the chat forum,#81903 by joecam18, he gave some really great info. as i explore the problem i see it worse, not simple.
i poured a quart in by the wipers and it did not come out the heater, it ran down the kick panel area on the wires and relays there.

next i poured more water on just the windshield and rubber and it ran thru the same and quicker.
i cut an access hole in the firewall by the hood hinge and i can see the vent but cant get to it to seal around it. it extends out near the side of the truck under the body metal. you cant cut that! to get at it.
somewhere in there is a normal drain to dump water on the ground, that works but not fast enuf to stop inside leaks.
im sure or assume the driver side is similar and i had rusted floorpans on both sides when i got my 2000 a month ago.
theres a suggestion of putting a dam to stop water from getting to the vent but i think it will just find its way on the driver side.
im thinking of doing the dam and drilling a few small holes to drain, on the edge of the firewall lip, into the engine area!. its painted, oily, greasy and at least you could see if its working.
i dont think it would hurt as much there as it really does soaking in the floormats forever! one thing is certain, if some leak, they probably all do and you dont see it till its late in the game, big job fixing floorpans.
ill report back later, my typing finger is tired.

Yup. Mine leaks unless I park it front end downhill. I have no carpets so I can see it. At one point it was dripping onto my brake pedal from the dash. Haven't even began to try and figure it out. Too many other things to fix that are more important. I might be changing the heater core if a reverse flush doesn't work so I'll try to deal with it then.

ok , you confirmed my belief that it leaks on both sides, not just the heater vent. i wonder how/where it leaks on that side?

i really want to solve this because im getting to like this thing! and i dont wan to be worrying about it rusting away again.floor pans were really bad, now solid.

I wouldn't say it does. It is probably coming in the passenger side and running along the dash. There is really no where it could leak on the driver side from the cowl.

That's a possibility. There's usually about three times as much water on the passenger side than there is in the driver. On the pass side I've noticed it dripping between heater box and glove box and also the kick panel near the fuse block. Hopefully between a windshield and heater core replacement I'll be able to figure it out.

Yeah. If it's coming from the windshield gasket it can be on the driver side. But not from in the cowl where the wipers are.

thanks again. i started the dam with some super adhesive and styrofoam. another application tomorrow.
then i poured water in drivers side, got nothing inside and it ran right out on the floor. so im feeling a little better.
i gotta check the windshield on drivers side or just add sealer all the way across. there seems to be some small openings near the corner of the windshield under rubber. ill brush it all the way and silicone it.

later...

Don't use silicone. Use Lexel.

x2 Silicone contains acids that are corrosive. Also can trap moisture.

progress...
lexel? never heard of it but ill try. till then i did the windshield rubber temporary with black electrical tape. it matches my black sport perfect!..i put the dam in and gooped it up again with adhesive,THEN ! i drilled two 1/4 inch holes at the firewall lip level on the driver side to aid in draining ,into the engine room!
while i was drilling i cut out a 2 inch piece of that lip above the famous head bolt making future head work a little easier.
i also blocked off a 4x5 area of the air intake screen reducing the amount of water that can get in. air should still be ok.
ill try to find lexel and do the windshield rubber on sides and entire bottom if i can get it in there.
then i will run the garden hose and do the acid test!
