Default voltmeter that reads low always

hey guys...

my voltmeter has always read low...like it's down into the red most of the time or just above it. i also have mounted another aftermarket voltmeter in the glovebox that reads correctly but what would cause the original meter to always read low?...don't know if it's connected but i also have an almost constantly squealing serpentine belt, i've replaced it 3 times and also the idler pulley twice and when it gets bad i spray some silicone on the belt and it quiets down for a short period but then starts again after a day or 2....although the meter does appear to show a little higher voltage while it's not squealing i'm not sure they're connected.

anyone else experience something like this?

thanx

Gauge could be failing.. As for your belt noise, stop replacing belts and idlers. Check all of your other pulleys. If you put water on the belt and the squeal stops, then it's pulley noise, if it still squeals then it's belt noise.
