Default voltage probs

OK. so today i was driving my xj today. when it died. tried to turn it over it cranked a couple of times then died and just clicked like the battery was dead. I bought a new battery put it in. noticed that the reason the other battery cut out was because the positive and negative cables had melted their covering and metal was touching. obviously a bad thing. so i got electrical taped them both up. tried to start wouldnt start cause fuel pumping was starting up so i switched the relays it started. but when my lights are on the voltage is at 10ish when lights off its at about 13. when i have lights on and i break the voltage drops in the red and the dash dims and everything. i just noticed my ground wire from my block to firewall snapped.. do you thing i just need a new ground wire? and obviously new battery cables cause electrical tape isnt going to cut it..please help me out thanks

I would look for a short in lighting system, and check for direct short from battery some were it could cause electrical fire before driving vehicle. Also I would replaced cables that have over heated and check voltage and amp draw on electrical system.

I had the same thing happen to me on my 89 Cherokee pioneer 4.0 automatic. My battery cables melted. Now I have no spark, and one of the relays clicks back and forth really fast when I first turn the key on. Ive checked the three fusible links, the cam position sensor, checked and replaced the crank position sensor, checked the coil, and the distributor. What relay did you switch? I tried switching out the one that was going crazy, but it does the same thing. Could my problem be the ECU?
