If it has a towing package, it could very well have a Dana 44 from the factory.
IDK, every source I looked at said "No", even with the tow package.

Well, being a Service Manager at a Jeep dealer from 1980 through 1992, I saw plenty. I even parted out a few with the Dana 44. 87 seemed to be the most likely year to find one from the factory.

I stand corrected. You're right. I just found it. Thanks for keeping me sharp.

When I look to buy parts vehicles, a Dana 44 will sway me into purchasing something I normally would walk away from.

Due to its strength and adaptability?

I have the D35 in my 98 Cherokee and the pinion has excessive play. I would prefer a factory D44 for an easy swap and alleged strength improvement over the 8.25 provided I can get it for a good price to offset the gear change that I will have to make. I also agree it wouldn't be worth swapping a D44 from another vehicle because of the extra work required. I am not against the 8.25 at all so I might end up with one of those and call it good as I am debating removing my factory ABS anyway.

As far as my plans go:
rear disc brakes
beefed up AX15 in place of the AW4(leaks pretty bad from the front) AW4 is great but I prefer manuals in my trucks
frame stiffeners
rock sliders
lift - 4.5" max
4.11:1 gears
33" tires

Wish list:
Coil over rear conversion
turbo
4:1 or better transfer case

Thanks for the replies and the help.

Sounds like you're building yours up more than mine is, but fwiw, my wife and I beat the crap out of the 8.25 in my '98 out in the Az desert on a trip with zero problems. Good luck!

Some friends, my wife and I are going to Barnwell Mountain second weekend of september, so my plans might get altered slightly depending on how my mostly stock jeep performs.

98 Jeep Cherokee SE
4.0 I6, AW4 4spd, NP231 PT xfer case, D30 fr, D35 rr w/ lsd, 3.55, has a 2" lift(spacers and shackles) from previous owner to fit 31s, also from previous owners: Smittybilt XRC bumpers, front and rear w/ tire carrier, and some fender flares.

Can anyone confirm that this is a d44 please?

This is an upside down d44 right?

Looks like a Dana 60 actually. The little notch on the lower right is the giveaway.

You sure? It has 10 bolts on the cover also instead of 9.

Edit: Forget it, it's early and my eyes are playing tricks on me, but I'm still not convinced that's a D44.
