Hi all,
Just recently I've noticed a vibration when coming to stop from about 7mph-0mph. Also, feel the same when coasting until I hit about 7mph from a standstill. Reminds me of when you're about to stall a manual trans car. Tach remains steady when this is happening. Tranny issue brewing?

2000 XJ 4.0, 91k miles

What kind of tires do you have? My son has 10.5 Duratracs and it rumbles bad just before stopping

 

BFGoodrich Long Trails, nothing crazy. It's definitely the motor or trans stressing the motor, or sure as heck feels that way. Like I said, it almost feels like a manual tranny about to stall or when you're not giving enough gas.

 

I'm having the exact same problem right down to the tooth. I thought it was the disks but it wasn't that. Checked the u joints on the rear drive shaft and both were good. Don't know where else to go. Not much help when I asked

 

Thanks y'all! I just pulled the front drive shaft and drove it to about 90 with no vibrations. Hell, I could actually see out of my mirrors. So, the logical conclusion being the front drive shaft has issues. However, it felt tight with no play and no indication of being screwed up just moving the joints around.

Next question is.....could it be the Dana differential? There was a small bit of play without it being engaged in gear (maybe an 1/8 inch). But guessing that's normal. Again, thanks for yall's help!!!!

 

Warped rotor or brake drum. Check them.

 

It could be off road tires or do you have a lift ?

 

For what I had I'm not sure I'd call it a vibration, but kind of a mild grinding when slowing down. I had it for a while especially after a highway drive where things would get warmed up. It finally got worse and worse.

Turned out out to be bad differential bearings. Quiet as a mouse now, but $600 at a differential shop to replace them...

 

Mine usually does that when the rear drums need adjustment (again). They also get a bit "grabby" sometimes so you can chirp the rears as you halt.
