Vibration above 55mph, clunk when slowing down.
Hey guys, my 2001 XJ when I got above 55mph, the whole dash would vibrate really bad, and when i was slowing down below 10mph, it would sound like something was clunkng. I took out the front driveshaft, and now they are both gone. My question is what could the problem be? I was thinking u joints but why would it be vibrating? Im lost. when i rotated the shaft back and forth, i felt some play where the driveshaft connected to the diff, but thats all.

if the problem is gone thats where it came from.
it could be ujoints grab em give em a wiggle side to side up and down just any way that you could get some excessive play to happen. then if thats not it take a look at your splines at each end of the driveshaft. if havnt found ur problem yet.
then id say its either something in ur transfer case or something in front diff.
ujoints go out its not uncommon. ( and cheap and easy fix if you have a set of sockets and a bench vise you can do it yourself )
splines would take some serious wheelin to strip.
same with your diff and transfercase for the most part.

I bet it's the spline.
Mine is loose and in other Jeep's I have owned they have gone bad. They cause bad vibrations. I can get mine rebuilt where I live for $175.00. I had my rear shaft u-joints replaced this week $38.00 for both of them. Call around for a true drive shaft place. They install the joints for the price of the joints. Much easier.

Do the wiggle test for the spline.
Just like u-joints, you grab it and try to wiggle it. If it moves side to side it needs redone. If you are unsure just take it into the drive shaft shop. They will check it for free and you will know for sure. I know you said you already have it out.

Same Problem
Did it slide the car sideways? If so you may have bent the axle flange. Jack up the rear end on the side they did not hit first. Put a bottle by the tire and rotate the tire with the Jeep in neutral and well blocked. If the wheel turns true try the other side. If not check for rim bending and then axle flange bending. Do you know how to check the axle flange? Remember to do the hit side as well. Same checks.
