Default Vehicle Storage

So due to the Fact im leaving for US Army basic training on sept. 22ed I need to figure out what to do with the Jeep. I will not return to get it until March due to the fact I cant have it at my Mechanics training location either. So I was thinking of renting a storage unit and just putting the Jeep in there for the 5 months i will be gone. But I have a couple questions.

First, Does that idea sound like a good one?

Secound, What should I do to store it...ex. drain to oil, get a set of stock tires so my 33's dont flat spot..

Any help would be great, I have no prior expierence in storing vehicles.

if your gunna put it in a storage place... put it on jack stands and take your tires off... deflate them a little and aromor all them up and put them in seperate garbage bags... not to sure about the oil but draining it isnt a bad idea.... leave just a little gas in it ... disconnect battery from terminal and store it inside the car or somewhere seperate.. also make sure everything is lubed up... you dont want things sitting for to long and not moving

5 Months isnt that long. I stored my vehicles for a similar 6 months on a regular basis while I was in the Marine Corps. Use a fuel stabilizer, and leave it low on fuel (but not below 1/4 tank). You want the fuel pump to remain fully submerged. The oil will be fine, just plan on changing it before you leave so you dont have sludgy oil left to sit in there.

Hitalonit mentioned putting it on jack stands and letting some of the air out, that is a good plan, but I dont see a need to take the tires off and store them in bags, its only 5 months, and if its in Michigan, they will be frozen most of the time your gone anyway. I would not recommend using armour all on them though, it may make your tires look pretty, but petroleum products deteriorate rubber and will void your warranty. Just make sure you wash your truck with good soap and water before you store it, and make sure the tires get cleaned well too.

Hitalonit also mentioned removing your battery. This is also a great suggestion. Just make sure wherever you store it is not a grounded surface (like metal bench or concrete floor). Its best to just set it on a chunk of 2X6 lumber. Even better if you can store it somewhere where it wont stay frozen all winter. Freezing a battery for that long can ruin it. If your storage unit has electricity, a trickle charger will keep it from freezing.

Also, make sure you have GOOD antifreeze/coolant in your truck. You could get by with not so good antifreeze in Michigan if you run it everyday, but sitting that long in the cold without ever getting heat it will freeze solid as a rock and split a water jacket.

Id recommend rat poison in the storage unit to make sure any mice die before it gets cold and they try to make your jeep thier new winter home. Make sure your windows are all up to keep bugs and dust out, and clean any trash out before you park it.

One last thing Id recommend is pull the rotor out of the distributor and take it with you, or lock it inside something. There have been people who like to steal cars from storage places while people are away. Just make it that much harder for them to do so.

I used to think that too, but the tire guy chewed my butt for it, and showed me where it talks about it in the warranty for my BFG All terrains. Ever since then, Ive avoided it and just run clean tires.
